We have all experienced those situations where negative habits of employees and friends seem to never die. We try to be patient or polite, until our head begins to throb and we feel an ultimate volcano that risks either a lost friendship or human resource issue. If I might dare to suggest, be free from that volcano before you explode (or implode).
By now, some may know I am an avid reader of Presidential biographies. A few years back, I was looking for a new vein of reading material, and I found the nuggets of leadership styles and insights worth the read. I also found interesting lessons in our nation’s history. It is always interesting to ponder ‘what if’?
I believe John Maxwell suggested that ‘intuition’ be listed as one of his 21 Leadership laws in the best seller ‘The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership’. Leaders today are in desperate need of developing and exercising this skill. Unfortunately, much like speed to a football player, intuition for a leader is not a classroom product.
Every leader should have a common goal of adding value to others. True leadership builds upon relationships which are created by contributing to the growth of others, and an organization. Let’s face it, every time we ratchet up the confidence, skill sets, and capabilities of our team, the organization gains value. Realistically, this is THE way to make any organization better in a competitive society. In any arena, there is only two ways to make the team better. Get new players, or make the players better. (replacing the leader hopefully is not an option).
